James Houston started the study of Kung Fu in 1990 under the legendary Grandmaster Simon Chi Chung Kwong. Born in Canton, Grandmaster Kwong has made a life long pursuit of studying martial arts and had the good fortune of learning Choy Li Fut Kung Fu as well as many other styles. GM Kwong studied directly under Chan Sai Woo, nephew of the founder of Choy Li Fut Chan Heung.

Choy Li Fut combines the martial arts techniques from various northern and southern Chinese Kung Fu systems. The powerful arm and hand techniques from the shaolin animal forms from the south combined with the extended, circular movements, twisting body, and angle footwork that characterizes northern China martial arts. It is considered an external style, combining soft and hard techniques, as well as incorporating a wide range of weapons as part of its curriculum. It contains a wide variety of techniques, including long and short range punches, kicks, sweeps and takedowns, pressure point attacks, joint locks, and grappling.

According to Bruce Lee “Choy Li Fut is the most effective system that I've seen for fighting more than one person. It is one of the most difficult styles to attack and defend against. Choy Li foot is the only style of Kung Fu that traveled to Thailand to fight Thai boxers that hadn't lost” *source Wikipedia: Choy Li Fut.

GM Kwong combined his extensive knowledge of Choy LI Fut and combined it with many other styles including White Crane, Buk Sing Choy Li Fut, BaJi, Mel Gar, Chin-Na, Tai Chi Chuan, Shaolin Five Animal and others. His system was renamed Dragon Tiger Eagle Kung Fu. The dragon representing his roots in China, the tiger the year of his birth, and the eagle representing America.

For over 30 years James Houston has trained under GM Kwong and remains very active in his practice of the art. He is currently the highest ranking disciple of GM Kwong.
